CHAPTER 20

Marek was glad Adam accompanied them on the drive out to Dutch Corners, otherwise he was pretty sure Karen would have grilled him over Becca and Adrienne. He wasn’t ready for that. He had only dropped off the meat and told Adrienne he’d planned a cookout. She looked as though she’d braced herself to be kicked out. But if he kicked out the dying, what business did he have defending the dead?

Karen pulled into the drive at the Van Eck farm. They all got out and looked around—an innocuous scene on the surface. For all Marek’s years here, the land had never been a thing to draw him, not the fields, which were work, or the desire to grow things on it, though the tractors and combines were kind of cool.

Adam struck a pose and flung an arm out toward the fields. “‘We go to gain a little patch of ground that hath in it no profit but the name. To pay five ducats, five, I would not farm it; nor will it yield to Norway or the Pole.’”

Marek got that he was the Pole, but he pointed out, “Okerlund is Swedish.”

“I’m a quarter Norwegian,” Karen reminded him.

The actor shrugged. “And I’m Dutch, not Dane, but when Hamlet works, it works.” His gaze fell on the garden, and he blanched. “Can I please go shower and change before Miss Josephine shows up with a clown suit?”

“You going to be okay out here?” she asked. “Remember you can’t drink the water.”

Marek noted that Adam avoided her gaze. “Yeah, I know where my mother kept a stash of cash. I’ll go to Casey’s, load up on bottled water.”

“Let us know if you find anything missing, or find paperwork on the land, or a will.”

Adam looked at Marek directly. “I will.” Then, with a last glance at the garden, he went inside, out of the damning sun.

Next up, they visited Todd Dordt again.

“Did I see you drop off Adam?” Todd asked first thing.

Marek nodded. “Yes, he’s a free man.”

“I was going to offer to pick him up, but I’ve got bees coming this morning.”

That surprised Marek. “The Kings settled already?”

“No, though I still hope Frank will, even if Jerry won’t.” Todd grinned. “My dad pitched in, said he’d seen how hard I worked, how happy it made me. He wants me bringing the bees to California every year, so he and Mom can see me because he said no way, no how, was he coming back to the farm.”

Someone, at least, had gotten his dream, but had it been built off of death? Maybe Ivy had wanted to sever the lease, and he’d gone to her, been rebuffed, then he’d shot her. “Now that Adam’s been cleared, we need to ask some more questions.”

Todd didn’t invite them inside. If he lived in the usual bachelor pad, heavy lifting would be required to clean it. He gestured toward the cheap plastic chairs on the porch, out of the sun. “Ask away.”

Karen drifted to
